The Calgary Foundation’s annual quality of life survey serves as a pulse check for the city. Its 2024 physical report, Holding it, Together, captured a year marked by struggle – rising grocery prices, declining mental health, a housing crisis and rents outpacing incomes. The design embraced a raw, resourceful aesthetic to reflect the challenges Calgarians faced, helping readers feel the weight of the crisis and better understand how people were getting by with limited means. Each handcrafted cover was made from recycled and found materials, making every copy unique. Inside, bold photography and visual metaphors added emotional resonance to abstract statistics, while stark typography underscored the urgency of the report’s findings. An interactive microsite extended the experience online. Engagement with the report tripled compared to
the three-year average.
