To reposition itself as not just a telco but a force for culture, Rogers became the first presenting partner for the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. “Rogers x TIFF” consisted of two trailers that ran during TIFF screenings, featuring returning characters giving different commentary. The 30-second “Critics” spot, for example, highlighted how, during the 11 days of TIFF, everyone becomes a critic. A school crossing guard, Chinese restaurant server and Sportsnet anchors share their opinions of TIFF films to unsuspecting listeners, with humour provided through their use of sophisticated film critic vernacular, such as “to me, it felt like a subtle homage to new Balkan cinema.” By turning everyday voices into film buffs, Rogers made its TIFF debut both memorable and unmistakably Canadian.
