2024 Winner

Zulu Alpha Kilo partnered with Street Lab, a non-profit focused on public space programs, to solve a long-standing problem in New York City. While it’s a tradition in hot summers for NYC neighbourhood kids to seek relief by turning on fire hydrants and splashing in the stream, there was real concern about excessive water usage, safety issues and low water pressure for firefighting. To tackle this, the team introduced “Splash Spots,” innovative hydrant caps designed to preserve the tradition while conserving water. “Splash Spots “offer four distinct water experiences that
use approximately 50% less water.

The design ensures safe water direction away from traffic and local businesses, with durable metal construction and off-functionality that doesn’t require attention from the fire department. “Splash Spots” enhanced the city’s aesthetics and functionality by transforming ubiquitous city infrastructure into vibrant, interactive elements. Street Lab has begun installing “Splash Spots” across NYC, potentially saving up to one million gallons of water every summer.
