When it gets hot, people in New York City have a long tradition of turning to fire hydrants in search of relief. But hydrants are often unsupervised, wasting a ridiculous amount of water. So Street Lab, a non-profit that creates and shares programs for public spaces across NYC, launched “Splash Spots” with the help of Zulu Alpha Kilo, reinventing the fire hydrant cap to release 50% less water and designing it with whimsicality in mind.

Colourful hydrant caps allow for four different water experiences and have an on/off function that doesn’t require the attention of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). The multidirectional design also directs water safely away from traffic and businesses. The new caps debuted at NYC children’s events, with the aim of being installed on all 300 hydrants opened by the FDNY each summer. In addition to FDNY, collaborations with the NYC Environmental Protection and the NYC Parks Department could potentially save over 1,000,000 gallons of water per summer.
