With one of the five days of Diwali coinciding with Remembrance Day in 2023, Barrett and Welsh sought to capture the spirit of both occasions when the agency sent out its annual Diwali greeting via emails to its South Asian clients and vendors, as well as a wider audience on social media. The shop had a fine line to tread in order to respect the sombre tone of Remembrance Day, while also reflecting the festive tone of Diwali.

For “A Diwali to Remember,” it devised the “Flaming Poppy” to symbolize both victory and sacrifice for an overall message of peace: the warm flame of a diya (an oil lamp symbolically lit during prayers, rituals and ceremonies) combined with the iconic image of the red poppy. This emblem was featured in video and animated GIFs for sharing across social media, blending Diwali wishes with a message of remembrance.
