The 2023 annual report for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, “Brilliance in Our Backyard,” illuminated the remarkable cancer research landscape in Alberta, highlighting the achievements that have put it on the global stage. Departing from conventional approaches, Daughter Creative shifted the report’s focus to everyday life in Alberta, using evocative photographs of ordinary scenes to provide a contrasting backdrop for stories of excellence and innovation in cancer research. The approach showcased brilliant everyday Albertans, inviting readers to recognize the
extraordinary in their midst.

The report’s design adopted a newspaper format, echoing the familiarity of daily life and reinforcing the theme of the “everyday.” This intentional juxtaposition of a low-fi aesthetic with cutting-edge medical research encouraged Albertans to appreciate the impact of their donations. The report underscores the province’s intrinsic contributions to medical advancements, positioning it as a hub of innovation deserving of recognition beyond traditional economic and rural narratives.
