2024 Winner

As a museum, what do you do when you’ve explored most of the mysteries of life? Turn your attention to death, of course. The ROM’s exhibition – Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery – invited visitors to consider death as part of a process and not a fixed point, teaching them about the subject through different biological processes and cultural rituals. To promote it, BHLA created “Ask Bigger Questions,” a film that embraces the unknown and demands viewers consider the greatest questions of them all.

Juxtaposing natural landscapes in light and dark, and through the use of stunning visual themes (such as a recurring sphere motif that suggests something otherworldly), the film asks viewers to consider their mortality through a truncated narration, asking: “Why do living things die? What would happen if they didn’t? Will we one day live forever? Will we even want to? Is death the end? Or is it a new beginning?” The end result is a strangely beautiful and chilling piece of art in itself.
