Cultural Pluralism in the Arts
Movement Ontario

"Black Brilliance"
Barrett and Welsh
Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) is a movement of Indigenous and racialized artists engaged in empowering the arts communities of Ontario. Every year CPAMO hosts The Gathering, which offers an interactive space for arts organizations, artists and attendees dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, inclusivity and pluralism in the arts.

To reach BIPOC artists, art workers and organizations who could benefit from presenting their own work at the 2020 edition of The Gathering (which focused on anti-Black racism in the arts), Barrett and Welsh launched a social campaign featuring lines in black-on-black type that highlighted the Black brilliance that has been kept in the shadows.

The approach helped communicate that life and art would lose its colour without the contributions of Black art and Black artists. The social posts ultimately helped sell out tickets for The Gathering.
