The pop-up restaurant idea was compelling enough to start: a dinner service prepared by 14 chefs in Toronto, each one HIV positive. But to tell the individual stories of those 14 chefs and simultaneously trace the history of HIV’s social stigma in Canada? That’s an ambitious brief. But Bensimon Byrne’s documentary June’s does just that, capturing honest opinions and remembrances from those living with the disease. Their stories not only show a community dealing with unfair social stigma, but outline how broad a swath HIV has cut through Canadian society.
