Travel Yukon
"The Art Show of Winter"
Cossette
Originally told in the Lingít language, the story of Raven bringing light to the world as winter ends has been passed down from generation to generation within the Tlingit community. Travel Yukon wanted to share this time-honoured story, so it teamed up with local Tlingit Formline artist Megan Jensen to capture it in a new way. Cossette helped the tourism agency create a film that centred around this story, told through Jensen as she crafted a 300-foot piece of Formline art in the snow. It took 15,400 steps in snowshoes and 11 hours to complete. While she crafted the work, Jensen narrated the history of Raven in Tlingít – the local language was specifically used to speak directly to the Tlingit community and those across North America who may have roots within it. The film was then posted online, honouring the story’s original purpose: to pass down a piece of Tlingit history. It reached a global audience, exposing travellers to the local community’s history, their language, and the magic of the Yukon’s winter sun. And while media attention increased awareness for the Yukon, the film continues to live on as an educational tool.
